The Start-Stop system in BMW is designed to reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions. This technology is available in most modern BMW models, such as the 3 Series, X5, and 7 Series, and operates automatically. Despite its advantages, it remains a topic of debate among drivers. In this article, we explain how the system works, its impact on components, and situations where it might be worth disabling it.
The primary function of the Start-Stop system is to turn off the engine during a stop and restart it quickly when the driver is ready to move. For example, when you stop at a traffic light in a BMW 5 Series (G30), the engine automatically shuts off when the car stops and the clutch is released (in manual gearboxes) or the brake pedal is held down (in automatics).

In urban settings, the technology can reduce fuel consumption by 5-10%. For example, in the BMW 3 Series (G20), this can mean a difference of up to 0.5 liters per 100 kilometers in city driving.

While the system has advantages, it can be problematic in certain situations:
If you often drive in heavy traffic, such as in large cities, frequent engine on/off cycles can increase wear on the starter motor. In the BMW 7 Series (G11), replacing a starter motor can cost several thousand zlotys, so it’s worth preserving.
In winter conditions, such as -10°C, the Start-Stop system can put additional strain on the battery. In the BMW X5 (G05), you might consider disabling the system to avoid starting issues.
If you’re towing a trailer or using a lot of power (e.g., air conditioning and multimedia systems), turning off the engine can affect these systems' efficiency.
BMW vehicles are equipped with AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) or EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) batteries, which are better suited for frequent charge/discharge cycles. However, intensive use of the Start-Stop system can shorten their lifespan. For example, a battery in the BMW 5 Series (G30) typically lasts 4-5 years with regular use of the system.
Similarly, BMW starters are reinforced, but replacing them can be costly. In the BMW 3 Series (E90), a new starter can cost up to 1,500 PLN.
